Values
In the book “The
Drive to Dubai” we can see some situations where personal values are reflected.
Specially we want focus on one :
The situation we
can see is when Khaled Mansoor (Kareem’s father) is accused of steeling Omar
bin Salem’s jewels. When he tells the entire story to his family, they don’t
doubt about him because they know that Khaled isn’t able to do this. So in this situation we can clearly see some
“family’s values” that were raised by themselves. This is why his son Kareem
does everything to show the police and everyone that his father isn’t a
thief. A value that this story presents
is the value of confidence.
We can
experience similar cases in our lives. How many times have we seen that
families fight for a relative because he or she is accused of something bad and
they want to show them innocents only because they know which values they teach
them and they know that this person isn’t capable to do something bad?
Sometimes we see that this effort worth. Another example is when a person is
accused of doing something wrong and people don’t believe that this person can
be able to do something like this only because the accused person reflected
always good values.
A personal
experience was that one day our neighbors were been steeled. They accused a
good friend of us but my family and I knew that he wasn’t the thief because he
always reflected good things. He is a hardworking person and a young boy who was
raised by a good family that instilled him values.
How can we, as future
teachers, inculcate values to our students so that they are able to decide what
is good and bad and take correct decisions?
Specific
objective
Our specific
objective is to search ways how we can instill our student through dynamics and
everyday things values that they can apply when they are facing a hard
situation.
For that, we
have to realize some steps:
- · make known the term value
- · Explain the different kind of values
- · Show how the values are reflected in our lives and how we can use them.
Values
In dictionaries
we can find that values are “important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by
the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or
undesirable” and that these values have big influence on a person's behavior
and attitude and serve as broad guidelines in all situations. These values are
often instilling in places like our homes, at church (religion) and at school.
One important thing that influences these beliefs is the persons we are
everyday with.
Values have
a decisive influence on the existence of man because they are part of its
self-definition as a subject. They occupy the first place in the order of our
priorities therefore they orient our decisions and shape our being. These are
acquired and configured along our lives. The values are
useful to evaluate our actions and those of others, but mainly to guide the
behavior of people.
Values that are Important in our lives
Love: The first of the most vital beliefs in life is love.
It is an important personal value to open your mind to the concept of love. The
way, in which you love your family, and friends, you can love everybody.
Understanding: This is the second vital value in our lives.
Understanding is the key to a happy mind and a caring heart. If you are ready
to understand and accept people and circumstances for what they are, you can
gain control over it. Understand that people are doing their best, and instead
of questioning it, try to find out ways to help them out.
Respect: It is very
important to have respect for people. This not only allows you to get inspired
by their positive aspects, it also allows you to notice their negatives. Nobody
is perfect. Respect is the only way we can adopt the best of all that is around
us, in the process, making us a better person every day, every moment. A very
important fact about respect is that the more you give, the more you earn. It
is in fact one of the most significant values in society.
Discipline: The fourth important value is discipline. A
disciplined person will have a lot of fun, but will make sure that he completes
his responsibilities. A disciplined and responsible person will respect his as
well as other's time. As such, he will always be punctual.
Honesty: The fifth value in life that is important is
honesty. Honesty is admitting to yourself that you are not perfect. It means
avoiding making a mistake. An honest person will try his best to not goof up,
but if he does, he will not only admit it, but will freely accept the
consequences.
All the other
values that are mentioned need to be accepted and followed with honesty. That
is the only way in which they will affect your life for the better.
Next we want to present you two
types of values…
Personal
values
These are
considered essential principles on which we build our life and guide us to
relate with other people. They are usually a blend of family values where are derived
from the fundamental beliefs of the parents, who use them to educate their
children and social-cultural values. Personal
values developed early in life may be resistant to change.
Social-cultural
values
These are the
dominant values of our society, which change with time, and either coincide or
not with our family or personal values. These
values show what is acceptable or unacceptable, important or unimportant, right
or wrong, workable or unworkable, etc., in our community or society.
After this short explanation we
want to show how we as future teacher can instill these values to our students …
It’s not a
secret that the most values a child receives are found in schools. There is a
currently problem. On one side schools are responsible for imparting attitudes
and values and on the other side there is the society, which is
beyond the school setting, ignores and even laughs at these values. So values aren’t
taught only by words you learn about them through everyday situations. To realize this, future teachers must live
these values; develop them in their lives because this creates happiness. They
have to be the main model for their students. It is essential to create an
environment of trust in the classroom. There must be a climate of affection and
acceptance. Each opinion must be accepted as it is, you should not judge, do
not allow insults or sarcasm. You have to appreciate the opinion as a step for
students.
Some conclusions…
Values are
important part of us. They develop with experiences with the environment and
with other people. So it is very important that from the childhood we start to
teach the children about values through dynamics and situations of every day.
But the most important part of this process is to make the values we teach a
reality for us. Only on this way we can teach our students with success.
